The City of Seattle today announced $1.5 million in truck purchasing incentives to Zeem Solutions (Zeem), a business leader in designing, building, and operating electric vehicle charging depots for commercial fleets.

The Northwest Seaport Alliance recently announced the inaugural incentive program for zero-emission truck and charging deployment. The NWSA identified Zeem Solutions as the awarded subrecipient. Zeem has a proven track record in the deployment of ZEVs and charging infrastructure, but this will be its first deployment in Washington State.

California-based Zeem Solutions, a Trucking-as-a-Service (TaaS) provider, has officially announced plans to build a new zero-emissions charging facility "in the vicinity" of the airport, which is located about 15 and 20 miles, respectively, from the busy Ports of Seattle and Tacoma.

Just a mile and a half from LAX, Zeem Solutions has built what may be the most active electric truck charging depot in the United States, featuring 78 DC fast charging ports, a 7.5 MW interconnection, and a growing number of Class 8 semis using it as their primary charging facility. Kaptyn operates a rideshare fleet of Tesla Model Ys in Los Angeles. Since November 2022, the company has been using a fleet-as-a-service solution provided by Zeem Solutions. We give (fleets) a way to incrementally get into EVs and learn as they go without a huge capital outlay,” said Bruce Shalett, Zeem Solution’s president and co-founder, back in Zeem’s LAX office two blocks from the future charging site. “It's literally everything you would need if it was at your own site. We just do it remotely for you.

Commercial fleets are under pressure by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to transition to zero emissions. So enter Zeem Solutions. Their LA-based depot is a one-stop shop for everything EV. Zeem provides a monthly flat fee for leasing, servicing, parking, charging, and energy storage using zero emission commercial vehicles.

Under this innovative operational model developed by Zeem Solutions, Kuehne+Nagel fleet drivers arrive at Zeem’s Los Angeles EV depot, park their personal cars, and drive away with a fully charged medium- or heavy-duty electric vehicle to run their routes, taking advantage of driver amenities, regular maintenance, and secure overnight vehicle parking, which are all included in a flat monthly fee.

The CaaS model has become more and more popular, with several companies entering the fray — Alphastruxure, Zeem Solutions, ChargePoint, and EV Connect to name a few. These providers could help more and more fleets make the switch to zero-emission vehicles, speeding up a national movement towards EVs.

Air cargo freight forwarding fleet Kuehne+Nagel is finding early success using Zeem Solutions’ zero-emission electric vehicle fleet-as-a-service in Southern California. The international logistics company is operating Zeem electric box trucks as part of its sustainable airport corridor initiative, which uses commercial battery-electric vehicles and charging solutions for shippers interested in zero-emission pickup and delivery at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Calstart’s Freight Electrification-as-a-Service for Transformation (FEaST) will spread out the cost of electrification for fleets to achieve an affordable way of electrifying truck fleets in cities. FEaST will include ten Class 8 electric trucks deployed by Anheuser-Busch from its Hunts Point depot in the Bronx, New York, with trucks and chargers financed by Zeem Solutions.

Zeem Solutions’ FaaS model provides a cushion for fleets planning for ACF compliance, giving them operational experience and the benefit of reserving these vehicles before all have been committed to operators who are moving quickly to secure EVs.

Businesses in Southern California that can’t afford to invest in purchasing electric vehicles can find a low-risk transition to electric vehicles and reduce emissions with EV fleet-as-a-service companies.

Zeem Solutions is helping small fleets get into EVs without investing in the infrastructure and higher buy-ins for zero-emission equipment and logistics. California’s BMC Transport recently added four trucks to its small fleet using Zeem’s FaaS solution.

Zeem Solutions CEO Paul Gioupis, whose California-based company leases electric vans and trucks from Class 2b through Class 8, also thinks wireless charging is a good fit for tractor-trailers. “We're in the middle of these use cases,” said Gioupis, whose EV lineup includes the Volvo VNR Electric. “We have these big tractors. They have to back into these big terminals and so what happens now is, ‘Where are you going to position a piece of [charging] hardware where they get a plug and plug in?

Zeem is looking to expand its operations using a $50 million capital commitment from infrastructure and energy investor Arclight Capital Partners LLC. The investment firm has a track record of investing in businesses and assets that contribute to a decarbonized future. Zeem co-founder and CEO Paul Gioupis said many businesses would like to use EVs but are deterred by up-front costs and the time it takes to make the switch to an emissions-free fleet.

For a flat monthly fee, Zeem provides fleet managers with electric trucks, cargo vans, transit shuttles and other vehicles according to their needs, along with a facility that includes fast-charging stations, parking and a break room for drivers. Including EV charging, maintenance and insurance along with the cost of leasing the vehicles, Zeem calculates that its flat-fee system is less than the cost of owning a gas or diesel fleet.

Zeem Solutions is doing something different when it comes to electric vehicles. It is providing a complete product of vehicles, chargers and associated services, such as maintenance and parking. “We are the first group that is doing this with actual chargers in the ground, with a meaningful fleet and customers that are utilizing the services today,” said Paul Gioupis, co-founder and chief executive officer of the Inglewood-based company.

The commercial backstreets surrounding LAX, the world’s third-busiest airport, host many a truck yard. But only one of these sites is full of heavy-duty vehicles that move silently and without emissions. The electric trucks all belong to Zeem, which plans to lease them to businesses that operate small and midsized fleets. Zeem activated its first six direct-current fast chargers this week and can support 65 vehicles per day rotating through for a full charge.

The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is awarding grants totaling $6.75 million to six projects across the region designed to promote clean transportation and reduce harmful emissions during last-mile freight and delivery operations.

Today, Ørsted announced it will partner with Zeem Solutions, to enable the rollout of 50 electric drayage trucks, associated vehicle infrastructure and mobility training programs for area residents at the Port of Newark. The $11 million partnership is a part of Ørsted’s Ocean Wind 2 bid that is being considered by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.
